Ganglion cyst is an annoying but harmless benign mass seen on the top or bottom of the wrist joint.
It is typically a round or oval fluid-filled sac which may be the size of a pea or may grow larger up to
about an inch. The ganglion cyst is usually mobile, although it has a stalk attached at the bottom.
Ganglion cysts are formed due to microtears to the ligaments in the wrist which cause escape of
synovial fluid into the tissue through small holes formed. These cysts are asymptomatic usually, but
may be painful if pressing against any underlying nerve, vessel or ligaments. If larger in size, it may also
hinder with the movement of the joint.
The ganglion cysts can be differentiated from other masses by tests like transillumination or by
scanning techniques like the MRI or ultrasound.
As part of treating these, they may be splinted, drained or surgically removed, but there are frequent
occasions where the cyst is seen to fill again. The ganglion cysts are seen to reduce in about 12 to 18
months on their own. Warm compresses may be applied to help drain the fluid and OTC pain
medications may be given. Homoeopathic medicines like Ruta, Calcarea Carb, Silicea, Rhus Tox, etc. are
very effective and may be taken under the directions of a homoeopathic practitioner.
