A keloid is a pink or skin-colored enlarged scar at the site of an injury, piercing, insect bite, burn, hair removal, or acne occurring due to excess collage production as a result of exaggerated healing response of the body. Keloid is non-contagious and benign. The keloid is usually seen in earlobes, shoulders, cheeks or chest. It begins at the site of an injury but spreads to a wider area as compared to a normal scar or a hypertrophic scar.
The tendency to keloid is higher in people under the age of 30 years, in pregnant women, in people of a darker skin tone, and in people with a family history of keloids. Keloids are usually thick and irregular scarring with shiny hairless skin. They may vary in size and may be soft, firm or rubbery in consistency. There may be itchiness or discomfort in the keloids.
